I’ll admit, since I got laid off, I haven’t been putting enough time into personal work. But last Monday, I got a call from my friend, Herme Sherry, who runs the Ms. Senior Arizona pageant. She was looking to see if I’d be coming out again this year. After I broke the news to her that I no longer work for the paper, I asked if I could still come and photograph the event for myself, to which she was very receptive.
Without an editor, I really got the opportunity to focus on the event how I’ve always wanted. Plus, with this being the third year I’ve attended, I was excited by the challenge of making photographs that were different from what I’ve made before. Sure, some of them are attempts to make a better, but similar photograph as before, but I spent a good deal of time trying out new ideas and keeping my eyes peeled for different looks.
The Ms. Senior Arizona pageant has been one of the highlights of my year for the last 3 years now. The women are always a ton of fun and incredibly open and inviting. I’m blown away by the amount of time and effort they and the rest of the crew put into this pageant every year.
Hopefully my photographs do some of that effort justice.
